Anger is beautiful

“Anger Management” is a celebration of the volcano inside each of us. Bright red and glistening, full of explosive force, fast and fearless — human beings are especially thrilling to watch when they’re glowing with anger.

Anger can be beautiful. Especially when it’s expressed through dance. Feeling takes form, control is relinquished, vast quantities of energy are released. From a choreographic standpoint, this is typically a recipe for exciting results. Indeed, in the last ten years the Joshua Monten Dance Company has specialized in working with just such volatile ingredients: capturing the wild and messy flow of emotionally charged movements and rearranging them into crystalline choreographic structures.

We all know how uncontrolled anger can rip in holes in the fabric of our social coexistence. Anger can sometimes lead to real violence, which we are all obliged to prevent. Still, it’s worth asking — should anger always be managed? Aren’t there some things worth fighting for, with tooth and nail?

With this production for four dancers we  imagine what it would be like to give free reign to our wrath, to strip away the civilized manners and the fake smiles, to open the floodgates and see where the currents carry us. Many consequences are possible, including new forms of reconciliation, intimacy and empowerment. And catharsis, that sweet feeling of relief when the storm has passed.

“Anger Management” is the third part of the “Counterfeit” trilogy, which has been supported by a three-year production grant from Kultur Stadt Bern.
